ABYSMALIA: Entire New Album Posted Online
April 21, 2009Finnish progressive/thrash metal band ABYSMALIA — featuring Jouni Koskela (NOME, LIQUORWORKS, AON) — has made its entire new album, "Quid Humanum Est", available for streaming at this location.
Jouni recently had the following to say about "Quid Humanum Est": "It's a concept album about a misanthropic person, who pieces his life events together and thinks of which led him to the ideology he chose to adopt. The lyrical approach is very personal as all my works so far, and elaborating it too much from my subjective perspective would underrate listeners'/readers' own interpretations. So I'm not really keen on telling people what are the events that take place and mold the protagonist's personality, character and perception of this world. What I can reveal though, that it links to 'Portals to Psychotic Inertia' very meticulously on some parts, but at the same time, it's spawning a new line to the story as well. Musically speaking, it's a bit more aggressive and straightforward than its predecessor. A lot more thrashier in a general sense, so to speak, but there still is great progressiveness and catchy pop edge present occasionally. Overall, it's again a collection of slightly different songs. Generally speaking, I wanted to create a bit more aggressive approach to the subject to underline the 'emotional storm' presented in the lyrics, and by doing that, I needed to tap up the riffs and give some punch to the music. I didn't want to 'overdo' the extremity, mostly because I wanted to maintain linear songwriting and still make it easy and enjoyable to play. These days (metal) people are hyped up about being extreme by its absolute value, but I wanted to make organic riffs without going past the borderlines to make it 'breathless.' Hence, the 'sloppy' playing, the organic and peculiar production and the general garage-ish approach. But that's a whole another subject."
